BHAG – Hope To Walk

Hope to Walk BHAG
(Big Hairy Audacious Goal: $40,000 for clinic) 2021-2022

To members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church:

Hope to Walk is an organization in Blacksburg, Virginia “offering prosthetic legs
and hope to a world in need”. In the United States we are fortunate to have a
medical system we can turn to; for many around the world this is not an option.
Through their vision and dedicated service, Hope to Walk (HTW) offers the
opportunity for amputees to walk again by offering free prosthetics and hope to
the world’s poorest.

According to the World Health Organization, there are 35 million amputees and
disabled people in the world who need assistive devices and do not have access
to them due to cost and lack of technicians. Commercial prosthesis cost
anywhere from $10-$25K, but the Hope to Walk solution provides a prosthetic
leg for a cost of $100. The leg parts are manufactured by volunteers throughout
our region and the kits are assembled at the Blacksburg facility.

After manufacturing the kits, Hope to Walk prosthetic teams travel to Third World clinics to fit the prosthetics to the amputees, and train local technicians in each country to care for their own communities. The result is a very cost effective and sustainable process which will ultimately be capable of operating independently. Thetotal estimated cost to set up a pr osthetic clinic outside the U.S. is $100,000.

Our goal is to help set up a new clinic! Bethlehem United Methodist Church has teamed up with Hope to Walk to raise $40,000 during 2021 and 2022 for a prosthetic clinic in Guatemala or another Third World country. This is a joint effort with The Lions Club International where a matching grant of $50,000 is being requested and other United Methodist churches being challenged to raise the remaining $10,000.

Please prayerfully consider giving to the campaign monthly during 2021. You can make
the difference in allowing someone to walk again. Make your donations to Bethlehem
United Methodist Church (BUMC) and note it is for the HTW – BHAG.
